Encouraging gifts to the endowment fund is one of Scouting’s highest priorities. It is one of the best ways to ensure that the Pine Tree Council can continue to offer the outstanding programs it now has long into the future and also grow to meet the needs of the youth and communities it serves.
Scouting helps young men and women build character, citizenship, fitness, and leadership. Developing youth who are physically strong, mentally awake, morally straight, has been the work of the Scouting America since 1910. Our efforts will be even more important in the coming years.
Learning from exemplary leaders, engaging programs, and timeless values, Scouts work to improve themselves and their communities. For many, positive attitudes and attributes learned as a youth will continue throughout life. Today’s Scouts will become tomorrow’s leaders in the trades and professions, business, education, government, and all walks of life.
During our Centennial Camp Hinds celebration, encouraging gifts to the Pine Tree Council endowment is one of our highest priorities. A gift to endowment ensures that the Council can continue to offer the outstanding programs we now have and grow to meet the needs of our youth and community for the next 100 years.
For the donor, a gift to endowment says, “Pine Tree Council Scouting is important to me and my family.” It says that Scouting truly is a movement with a mission for me. It is more than an organization; it is a way of life. It is what we say and do in the spirit of the Scout Oath and Law. The Pine Tree Council Endowment exists to ensure the Council’s long-term financial health. Your support will help us meet the current and future goals of the Pine Tree Council.

A bequest is one of the most straightforward ways that you can leave a gift to the Pine Tree Council, Scouting America, and create a meaningful legacy locally in Maine. With the help of an attorney, you can make a meaningful gift in support of conservative principles while still maintaining the flexibility to modify your plans in the future if needed.
How a Bequest Works
Bequests of real estate, personal property, business interests, and cash are typically made by way of a will or revocable trust. An estate planning attorney can help you include a charitable gift for Pine Tree Council or add a simple codicil to your existing will.
The method used to make a bequest will depend on the kind of gift you choose to leave to the Pine Tree Council. By making the Boy Scouts a percentage beneficiary, for example, the amount of your gift will automatically adjust itself with changes in your estate’s value.
The last step in leaving any bequest involves the transfer to charity. When you pass away, the bequest property will be transferred to the Pine Tree Council. The full value of this gift will be transferred tax-free and your estate will receive an estate tax charitable deduction.
Different Methods to Bequest
- Percentage bequest – make a gift of a percentage of your estate
- Specific bequest – make a gift of a specific dollar amount or a specific asset
- Residual bequest – make a gift from the balance or residue of your estate
- Contingency bequest – have your gift default to Heritage in the event one of your heirs predeceases you
How do I make a bequest as part of my will or trust?
With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift be made to family, friends or the Pine Tree Council as part of your estate plan.
[Example bequest language] – “I give, devise and bequeath to the Pine Tree Council, Scouting America, 146 Plains Road, Raymond Maine, 04073 [insert dollar amount, percentage of the estate, or describe property] to be used for its educational purposes.”
The Pine Tree Council, Scouting America Tax ID number is: 010211490.
